Just as we thought the race to the largest megapixel camera was over,
smartphone sensor manufacturers like Samsung and Sony blew the market away with their 48MP super-resolution cameras. Samsung took things to the next level with the new Samsung GW1 64MP sensors, which is the same one found in the Vivo NEX3.
Samsung was not content with 64 megapixels. It decided to partner with Xiaomi to create a 108MP camera sensor called the Samsung ISOCELL Brilliant HMX. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 5G’s camera sensor is more than 100MP, making it the first smartphone with this feature.
2The Sensor Was Developed In Close Collaboration With Xiaomi
Smartphone makers often work with companies such as Sony and Samsung to develop their camera sensors. This time, however, Xiaomi appears to have made significant investments in the development of the 108MP sensor together with Samsung.
Samsung’s official press release clearly reveals that the sensor was developed in close collaboration with Xiaomi. It’s not surprising that Xiaomi was the first to use this sensor. Manufacturers will soon get this sensor, given its partnership with Xiaomi.
The size of smartphone sensors is increasing, but the 108MP sensor goes beyond that. The smartphone market’s largest image sensor is 1/1.33″ in size. It is three-quarters the size of a standard 1” sensor on point and shoot cameras. You can also look at it this way: The 64MP Samsung GW1 sensor is 1/1.7″ in size, while the 48MP GM2 sensor is 1/2 span>
The Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor is capable of capturing true 6K resolution videos at 30 fps. Why is this so important? You must know that phones such as the Red Magic 3S or the Nubia Z20 can perform 8K.
These two Nubia models are capable of 8K at 15 fps. A flagship smartphone equipped with the HMX sensor can technically produce 6K (6016 x 33484) at 30 fps.

The 108MP Samsung HMX sensor uses its Tetracell technology to combine four pixels in one, resulting in brighter large pixels. The sensor can produce 27MP resolution images that are more vibrant and clearer in low lighting. The sensor can produce large images of 108MP resolution with more details when the lighting conditions are favourable.
Samsung’s Smart ISO will work in conjunction with the sensor to adjust the ISO levels based on lighting conditions. This smart tech toggles between a high and low ISO depending on the lighting conditions.
