Browser right now, and how many are closed? Count them. Although it may seem embarrassing, you are not the only one struggling with this number. Every tab is important to you. It could be useful information for a future project, or it may just be something you’d like to see later. Whatever the reason, your brain could be responsible for too many tabs open.

Humans and Multitasking Don’t Mix.

It slows down your computer and can also slow down your brain. Multitasking is not something you are good at. Your mind is not able to organize and comprehend all the tabs simultaneously, unlike a handy online notebook. Tab-overload can lead to frustration and overwhelm.

People mistakenly believe that they can multitask. The brain actually works in a different way from what we thought. Although you might appear to be working on multiple things simultaneously, your brain is actually just switching between tasks quickly. Multitasking can lead to brain overload and make it difficult for people to perform well on cognitive tests.

Why Do You Keep Opening Tabs?

Why is it that people continue to open more tabs than they should? Boredom could play a part. People feel like they have to do something every day because of their constant access to technology. A person may feel the need to work on another project as soon as they start one project. This can lead to too many projects being started and not finishing them.

Others might open more tabs to ensure they are still connected with the community. Internet FOMO (fear and obsession with missing out) is alive and well. This is why people check their emails every 30 minutes and also explains why they update their Facebook and Twitter accounts constantly. No one wants to be the last to hear the latest gossip and news. FOMO can lead to anxiety in many cases. However, you might be able to reduce it by closing certain tabs.

You should be aware that sometimes you may need to open multiple browser tabs. If a student is working on a term paper, for example, they might have multiple research sources open at the same time. This allows them to quickly gather and compare the necessary information to complete their project. But if a student is trying to write essays for multiple classes simultaneously, too many tabs will slow them down.

Is There Such a Thing as Too Many Tabs?

Although you might feel accomplished by having so many tabs open in your browser, they are not helping you. Instead of focusing on what’s important, you should be able to focus on the task at hand. The extra tabs can actually shorten your brain’s ability to concentrate. Unorganized information can make you feel overwhelmed.

What is the best solution? You can close all tabs and stop jumping from one task or another. Instead, you should focus on one thing at a given time before you begin browsing the internet to find your next project. Your computer will run more efficiently, and you’ll be able to retain the information longer.
